Colmillo Blanco is a civil association in charge of the protection of feral animals in the city of Oaxaca, Southern Mexico, and that, in each dry season, keeps alive a small oasis of approximately 2 by 4 square meters that stands out like the only mirror of water existing in the 87 hectares of forest that survive without federal and state protection in Cerro del Fortín, located in the middle of the concrete and asphalt of the Oaxacan capital.

“I am practically fighting alone against a councilor, a municipal president and perhaps even agencies, everyone wants this natural reserve area, but we are not going to allow it,” said Colmillo Blanco, who for four years has reforested some 1,500 endemic trees from the area.

They said that one of the drivers of damaging and affecting this natural reserve is Councilor Pável López, who at all costs wants to reactivate, modify or change the use license, to make way for the construction of homes with the entry of multiple real estate agencies.

“We know about the family relationship – because they are cousins – Pável López, councilor of Oaxaca de Juárez with Jesús Romero, the current Secretary of Government, so what we assume is that they have already defined that they will do it, regardless of damaging this lung, which I dare according to the few that exist in the capital of Oaxaca,” Colmillo Blanco highlighted.

They added that building real estate is giving way to disorder in the area, which would damage Cerro del Fortín, where he has built on his own initiative an oasis for the flora and fauna of the area, since in the drought or low season it serves to provide life to this natural space.

It is important to highlight that last Thursday, October 12, in a council session of the municipality of Oaxaca de Juárez, Pável López Gómez, councilor for Public Works and Urban Development, and Historical Center, proposed annulling agreement 001/CU/2021 of November 2021, by which changes in land use and construction licenses for the municipality’s natural reserves were suspended.

The same councilor stressed that doing this “is leaving out hundreds of people who acquired land to build their homes in the area”, however, this demand did not prosper.
