The Sinaloa Cartel is characterized by its extreme violence as seen in the two arrests of Ovidio Guzmán, alias El Ratón, former leader of the Los Chapitos faction. With his extradition to the American Union, it is almost a fact that the criminal structure will retaliate against Mexican officials, warned Mike Vigil, former agent of the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA).
In an interview with Infobae México, the former agent with more than 30 years of experience mentioned that the capture of El Chapo Guzmán’s son would bring retaliation for Mexican officials.
“I believe that they will have retaliation because when Ovidio was captured the first time (October 17, 2019), the Sinaloa Cartel reacted very quickly to free him. Also, in the second capture they mobilized, I believe, faster than any Army in the world by closing the roads and starting to shoot at commercial planes that were landing and leaving the Culiacán Airport,” explained the former agent.
He pointed out that what is also known as the Pacific Cartel is characterized by being very violent, so he does not doubt that it will act. He mentioned that the capture of Ovidio Guzmán means a symbolic victory for both governments, but he explained that it will not damage the infrastructure of the Sinaloa Cartel and they will continue to operate without having the slightest impact.
After being extradited by American justice, he considered that it is very possible that El Ratón will be sentenced to life imprisonment. “It is possible because he is accused in New York and there are the best prosecutors who handle very complex conspiracy cases, so it will be very difficult for Ovidio to escape justice,” he noted.
The first arrest of Ovidio Guzmán occurred on the afternoon of October 17, 2019, a day known as the “Culiacanazo”, after the capture operation was overwhelmed by the violence and logistical power with which the Sinaloa Cartel operated.
On that occasion, elements led by the Drug Trafficking Information Analysis Group (GAIN) of the Mexican Army subdued Ovidio Guzmán López and other members of his family. However, President Andrés Manuel López Obrador ordered his release because there were threats to attack the population by members of the criminal structure.
Meanwhile, in his second capture, the son of drug trafficker Joaquín El Chapo Guzmán Loera was detained as part of a federal operation during the early hours of January 5 in the Jesús María syndicate, also in the municipality of Culiacán, where 29 died. and 35 injured.
