President Andrés Manuel López Obrador confirmed the purchase of Mexicana de Aviación, this after a labor court confirmed the dismissal of an award that benefited only 200 of the more than 6,000 workers who are part of the former employees and company retirees.
During his tour of the southeast of the country, the president told the local press that “we are about to inaugurate this year the new airline that is going to be called Mexicana de Aviación because the matter of a trial in the judicial branch has already been resolved,” he said. President.
And he added: “We are going to buy from the workers laid off from Mexicana, which are around 6,500, they are going to buy the brand and two or three buildings and it is going to allow them to receive an income, it is the oldest airline in Mexico is going to fly those planes from the new Mexicana with a public company that we are creating,”.
Despite López Obrador’s statements, El Financiero consulted with the Mexicana workers’ union organizations about the president’s statement and they indicated that they have not yet received a formal message from the government.
On Thursday, July 6, a labor court ratified the withdrawal of the measure that hindered the sale of Mexicana de Aviación to the Federal Government, so the purchase is freed.
According to representatives of the airline, the court ratified the dismissal of the award that benefited 200 workers to obtain 50 percent of the resources agreed to buy the airline.
With this, the Government would no longer have any obstacle to finalize the purchase and sale that it had agreed at the beginning of the year for around 817 million pesos.
Fausto Guerrero, representative of workers, former workers and retirees of the airline, indicated that despite the ruling, Mexicana employees will consider, if the operation is completed, the group of dissatisfied workers in the final dispersal of resources.
On Wednesday, July 5, President Andrés Manuel López Obrador assured that the purchase would be defined on Saturday in a meeting with military elements, who will be the operators of the new state airline.
In addition, the government, through a military parastatal, had already begun the registration of the Aerolínea Maya brand as a way of guaranteeing the name of the airline that would start flying in December of this year.
