The strategy of militarizing public security by the current government and the war against drug trafficking, initiated by Felipe Calderón and continued by Enrique Peña Nieto, have left 493 US citizens as missing persons and not located in Mexican territory.

Of that number, according to the National Registry of Missing and Unlocated Persons (RNPDNO), 245 disappearances of citizens of the American Union were registered only in the government of President Andrés Manuel López Obrador, which represents 49.7 percent.

Among them is the disappearance of three American women of Hispanic origin, who, according to the FBI, from the border town of Peñitas, on the outskirts of McAllen, traveled by vehicle to Mexico on February 24 to sell in a market. of Montemorelos, in Nuevo Leon.

This case, however, has not received the same media attention as that of March 6, when the FBI offered a $50,000 reward for information on the whereabouts of four US citizens who were missing after a group of men armed kidnapped them in Matamoros, Tamaulipas.

The following day, the Mexican authorities announced that they found the four people –who disappeared on Friday, March 3–, two of them dead, another wounded, and a fourth unharmed.

It should be noted that, according to the RNPDNO of the Ministry of the Interior, between March 15, 1964, and November 30, 2006, there is only a record of five missing Americans, therefore the highest number of cases has been registered. from 2006 to date.

With this, since 1964, a total of 498 Americans have been registered who have disappeared in Mexican territory, of which 331 are men and 167 are women.

According to the National Program for the Search for Missing and Unlocated Persons, published this month, a group in a situation of particular vulnerability to the problem of disappearance are migrants, due to the conditions of violence, insecurity, and precariousness to which they are exposed in their transit through Mexico.

“Organized crime groups have become key players behind the specific phenomenon of missing migrants,” he refers.

This same report states that, according to figures from the RNPDNO, in the period from March 15, 1964, to December 31, 2022, there are 3,821 missing, missing, and located foreigners.
