The Mexican men’s basketball team achieved the feat and won its last two games in the Americas qualifier against Colombia and Uruguay, which gave them a direct pass to the FIBA World Cup to be held from August 25 to September 10 in Japan, Indonesia, and the Philippines.
Last Thursday, February 23, the Mexican squad mercilessly defeated Colombia in their own territory and, with this, they managed to enter the qualifying zone in their group, so they only had to defeat Uruguay to advance to the World Cup, although this was not going to be an easy task.
The game was played on Sunday, February 26 in Montevideo, and in the first quarter the South American team made the Mexicans nervous by leading by up to 8 points; however, in the second period, the 14 Aztec warriors woke up and rallied the match.
After a long qualifying process of more than a year, Mexico finished with a record of 8 wins and 4 losses, equaling Puerto Rico and Brazil, but thanks to Mexico’s direct rivalry with Brazil, the Aztec team was able to get a direct pass to the World.
The seven teams from America that will be in the international competition are the United States, Puerto Rico, Mexico, Brazil, Canada, the Dominican Republic, and Venezuela, highlighting the surprising absence of Argentina, which lost its ticket in the last minutes.
The last time Mexico went to a FIBA World Cup was in 2014, but before that performance, the Aztec team had not attended a World Cup since 1974, so this pass means a great achievement for national basketball.
