EFE.- The democratic development of Mexico presented setbacks in almost all dimensions after the pandemic, since only democracy in the institutions rose compared to 2021, revealed the “Report on the results of the Democratic Development Index of Mexico 2022 (IDD)”, posted on Monday.

“The impact has left its mark on practically all areas of economic and social life,” Jorge Arias, author of the IDD, said at a press conference.

Prepared by different organizations such as the Konrad Adenauer Mexico Foundation and the Social Union of Businessmen of Mexico, in addition to academic organizations and the National Electoral Institute (INE), the IDD detailed that the increase in the national average of the index reached 4,721 points, on a scale of 0 to 10 thousand.

Arias recalled that this year’s average “is not the worst year in this measurement” since in 2018 the lowest was obtained with 3,234 points on a scale from zero to 10,000 and is higher than that of 2021, where 4 thousand 138 points.

“This year the average indicator for the entire country is a little better, but it is very far from the historical average of the Democratic Development Index in Mexico,” he pointed out.

The expert specified that the Democracy of Citizenship indicator fell by 1.7% and only Yucatan and Veracruz managed to exceed seven points at the national level, while Coahuila and Chihuahua had the minimum democratic development with a value of less than 3 thousand points.

Regarding social democracy, the researcher specified that this index fell by 11%, recording the post-pandemic social deterioration.

Among the states with the highest performance are Nayarit (2,000 points) and Zacatecas (1,053). On the other hand, Chiapas is the one that had the lowest score of the 32 states of the country.

Economic Democracy fell 9% and entities such as Mexico City, Nuevo León, Coahuila, Sinaloa, Aguascalientes, Chihuahua, Campeche and Querétaro, are those that are above one thousand points, exceeding the national average of economic management in the country.

On average, he said, the country’s states have 4,220 points in this area, although it was not the worst year, since 2012 and 2014 had registered lower figures.

Overall, in the global index, Arias said that the state of Yucatan is at the top of all dimensions; while the states of Sinaloa and Colima ranked second and third, respectively.

In addition, the report specified that only the democracy of the institutions rose 3% on average compared to 2021.

This, said the author of the report, is the second year in a row where few states manage to stand out for their score.

“Historically, the number of states scoring highly developed had ranged from 11 to 5 states, up until before the pandemic. In 2021 there were only two and this year there are three”.

That is why, he said, with the appropriate decisions, with the expected recovery of the economy, a decrease in the consequences of the pandemic and with the hopeful effect that it generates in the elections, “surely the prospects for democracy towards 2023 and 2024 they will contribute to raising the national average index” in future measurements.

The IDD-Mexico evaluates the behavior of democracy to implement public policies and is carried out by the INE in collaboration with the Center for Political and Social Studies (CEPOS), the Social Union of Businessmen of Mexico (USEM), the Konrad Adenauer Stiftung Foundation (KAS) Mexico and PoliLat.
