Édgar Valdez Villarreal, La Barbie, returned to the custody of the  United States Federal Prison Agency (BOP), after almost three months of not appearing in the records. In November, the former operator of the Beltrán Leyva brothers appeared as “not in BOP custody.”

Faced with this situation, Mexico requested an explanation from the US government to be certain of where La Barbie was and to discard the versions that he had been released.

The United States embassy in Mexico assured that the former drug trafficker was still in custody, although it did not specify the details, Foreign Minister Marcelo Ebrard reported on November 29.

After no longer appearing in custody, La Barbie was expected to be one of the prosecutors’ witnesses in the trial against Genaro García Luna in the United States, after having taken him out of the prison where he was; however, the argument phase concluded with the testimony of Jesús El Rey Zambada as the star witness.
