Jesús Ramírez Cuevas, spokesman for the Mexican presidency, has assured that Tesla plans to open a new plant in Mexico City, the capital of the North American country. It would be located about three kilometers from the Felipe Ángeles airport (AIFA) , and it would be an assembly plant that arrives to join the proposal in the state of Nuevo León.
According to the government official, this plant would serve as an export center for Tesla. The plan is to take advantage of AIFA, using it as a hub to export product by air. However, Jesús Ramírez Cuevas did not offer more information regarding the rest of Elon Musk’s plans.
“Tesla is studying to invest in that area to take advantage of the AIFA,” Ramírez told Reuters. Statements that are similar to those that he already gave to the newspaper El Heraldo, to whom he assured that “Tesla will invest there… in an assembly plant, to export directly by air.”
After contacting another Mexican government official, the aforementioned medium discovered that the plans of Elon Musk’s company are not a confirmed fact. The latter commented that, in effect, Tesla was offered a glimpse of the site where the company’s next plant could exist. However, they did not ensure that the plans would be carried out.
It’s not the first time we’ve heard about possible Tesla plants in Mexico. It seems that Elon Musk is interested in using the Latin American country as a strategic base. After all, in December 2022 we were already seeing the first rumors of a Tesla plant in the state of Nuevo León. These plans have not been confirmed, but reports say that we could see an official announcement in early 2023.
Mexico becomes a place of interest for Tesla, and the feeling is mutual
Tesla is not the only one interested in having plants throughout Mexico. In fact, on previous occasions the governors of Jalisco and Guanajuato have already expressed their interest in becoming the future home of a Tesla factory.
Images published at the end of 2022 portrayed Elon Musk in Monterrey, well accompanied by the state governor, Samuel García, together with Emmanuel Loo (undersecretary of investment of the state Ministry of Economy) and Iván Rivas (secretary of Economy). Shortly after, it was Garcia who let it be known that he had had a meeting with the “richest man in the world.”
Despite all the reports about it, the new Tesla plants in Nuevo León and Mexico City remain an unconfirmed fact. It is likely that it will continue in this state for a little longer, and the fact is that the construction of a Tesla Gigafactory is not something simple and involves many studies at an environmental level.
Tesla hasn’t offered a concrete response to requests for comment, so the mystery remains.
