Although the Health authorities indicate that the sixth wave of COVID is on the decline, Mexico reported more than 300 deaths in a week due to the virus for the first time since August 2022.
n the last seven days, Mexico reported 25,488 new cases and 301 deaths from COVID-19. For the third consecutive week, the record for deaths from the virus was broken in a week since December, when the Ministry of Health decreed the sixth wave of infections.
According to the agency’s weekly technical report, as of this Tuesday, January 31, Mexico accumulates 7,368,252 positive cases and 332,198 deaths from the virus.
The estimated active cases of COVID were reduced again, to this day they detected 29,738, a drop of 1,813 infections compared to last week, which are found predominantly in the following entities: Mexico City, Aguascalientes, Colima, Querétaro, Nayarit, Tlaxcala, Nuevo León, Baja California Sur, Zacatecas, and Guanajuato.
Active cases are considered to be those positive who started symptoms in the last 14 day , allowing to identify where there is greater viral activity and increase in virus transmission.
Regarding confirmed COVID cases accumulated by state, the first 10 entities that accumulate the highest number of cases are: Mexico City, State of Mexico, Nuevo León, Guanajuato, Jalisco, San Luis Potosí, Veracruz, Tabasco, Puebla and Sonora, which together they make up 64 percent of all accumulated cases registered in the country.
Bye, bye, sixth wave of COVID: Gatell sees a decrease in cases
Hugo López-Gatell, Undersecretary of Health, announced that the sixth wave of COVID-19 in Mexico has already begun its downward phase and that it reached its peak in the first week of January 2023.
During the morning press conference, the official reported that from January 1 to 7, an average of 4,645 daily cases of COVID were registered in Mexico, more than 32,000 weekly cases, the highest number of the last wave of infections. .
In the following weeks, infections have registered an accelerated decrease -of more than 50 percent- until reaching an average of 2,030 daily cases during the week of January 22-28.
