On Thursday, January 26th, Andrés Manuel López Obrador, president of Mexico, questioned what he perceives as the “silence” of the UN, the Organization of American States (OAS), and the European Parliament in the face of the crisis in Peru, where he still recognizes Pedro Castillo as the legitimate leader.
“The UN, the OAS, where were they? Where are they now with all that is happening in Peru? Where are they? Where are the legislators of the European Union? Enough of pretending, of acting falsely. We no longer want a farce,” the president declared in his own peculiar way at his morning press conference.
López Obrador has intensified his criticism after the demonstrations in Peru, where more than 60 people have died since last December in protests against the government of Dina Boluarte, whom he has not recognized as president.
The Mexican president insisted that resolving the crisis “belongs to the UN and the OAS.”
“And we return to the same thing, they don’t see, they don’t hear, they don’t speak, they are like vases, they are like ornaments. These are institutions that require a sharp renovation in terms of their functions,” he said.
The international organizations in question have pointed to the human rights crises in Mexico, such as disappearances, murders of journalists, and homicides in general.
