Yasmín Esquivel Mossa, minister of the Supreme Court of Justice of the Nation (SCJN), one of the three candidates that Andrés Manuel López Obrador, president of the country, proposed for the position and who aspires to preside over the institution, was accused of plagiarizing her Bachelor’s thesis, which she rejects.
On Wednesday, the Latinus portal published an article by writer Guillermo Sheridan entitled: “An intern minister: Yasmín Esquivel, candidate to preside over the SCJN, plagiarized her undergraduate thesis.”
Sheridan accuses the minister of having plagiarized the contents of a thesis published in 1986 by Edgar Ulises Báez Gutiérrez to graduate in 1987 as a law graduate from the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM), one of the most prestigious in the country.
In the article, the writer presents images of the texts of the minister’s thesis, which he compares with those of Báez Gutiérrez, in which an alleged plagiarism of practically all the content of the work that the minister used to obtain her university degree can be seen.
In addition, he accused Professor Martha Rodríguez Ortíz, who was his thesis director, of having been an accomplice in the plagiarism, since she also directed Báez Gutiérrez’s thesis and, according to the writer, knew that the content was almost identical.
In this regard, the minister assured that Sheridan’s article is “totally false.” “Now what else are you going to invent?” she said on her Twitter account.
This Thursday, December 22nd, professor Martha Rodríguez Ortíz asked in a letter that Latinus rectify her information, as she defended that the thesis “is not plagiarism as it is wrongly and falsely indicated by the published column.”
The scandal occurs a week and a half after the plenary session of the Court meeting to elect the president of the SCJN instead of Arturo Zaldívar.
