Mexico fell 0-2 to Argentina on Saturday, November 26th, at the Lusail Stadium, as goals from Lionel Messi and Enzo Fernandez propelled the Albiceleste to all three points.

El Tri now sits in last place of the Group C standings, with just one point from the 0-0 draw against Poland. In order to qualify for the Round of 16, Mexico must defeat Saudi Arabia and hope for a desirable result in the match between Argentina and Poland.

Should Poland win, or Mexico would go through with any victory over Saudi Arabia? If Argentina triumphs, goal differential would come into play, forcing Mexico to score at least three goals on Wednesday. Though the path may be complicated, Hirving ‘Chucky’ Lozano insists the team will continue fighting.

“We have to turn the page, we have faith, we have hope. If there is 1 percent we are going to fight for that,” he told the media at the Lusail Stadium.

“We set it out as the coach proposed. In the first half, we did very well and in the second there were details that cost us. We are working, if we miss the goal, but we have to work on it.”

Mexico has qualified for the Round of 16 in their past seven World Cup appearances, raising the stakes for 2022. The team last went out at the tournament’s group stage in 1978, losing against Poland, West Germany, and Tunisia.

With one game left, Mexico’s players know that everything is on the line.

“[We need to] take advantage of the plays we have and seek to score goals,” said Mexico’s Roberto Alvarado. “Keep moving forward, raise your head up and train for this last game and leave everything on the field.”

Mexico concludes the group stage on Wednesday against Saudi Arabia at the Lusail Stadium.
