Locals kill and cook a massive crocodile in Tepalcatepec, Michoacán; a police officer would be involved, and animal activists condemned the facts.

Activists and animal rights protectors have addressed messages to Profepa, in which they point out that it would be a case of animal abuse.

A large crocodile was allegedly captured, gunned down, and later cooked near Tepalcatepec, Michoacán, as seen in publications, photos, and videos circulating on social networks.

Animal rights activists have sent messages to the Federal Attorney for Environmental Protection (Profepa), in which they point out that it would be a case of animal abuse, in addition to demanding that it carry out the corresponding investigation.

“We demand that Profepa investigate and punish those responsible,” read a Facebook post by the Animal Heroes group. “We cannot, nor should we continue to take advantage of animals, animal abuse must be condemned throughout Mexico.”

In one of the images posted on social networks, the skinned crocodile is observed, hanging from a rope, while next to it is a man wearing a uniform that would correspond to a municipal police officer.

According to the Government of Mexico, there are 23 species of crocodiles around the world, and only three of them live in our country: the swamp crocodile (Crocodylus Moreletii), the river crocodile (Crocodylus Acutus), and the alligator (Caiman Crocodilus).

Mexican species of crocodiles are subject to special protection by the Official Mexican Standard NOM-059-SEMARNAT-2010.

Due to the quality of their skin and the ease of their processing at an industrial level, crocodiles have endured intense exploitation in Mexico and Central America, which is why in the past they have been at risk of disappearing from the wild.

Since 1999, efforts have been made to protect them, such as the Project for the Conservation, Management, and Sustainable Use of Crocodylia in Mexico.

In addition, every August 23rd National Crocodile Day is celebrated.
