In San Ignacio, Mazatlán, Concordia and Rosario they can now produce and market it inside and outside of Mexico.

Mazatlán, Sinaloa.-  Agave producers from the municipalities of San Ignacio, Mazatlán, Concordia, and Rosario can now market their mezcal inside and outside of Mexico.

The Secretary of Economy in the state, Javier Gaxiola Coppel, revealed that he won the legal dispute with Oaxacan producers, who did not want the Denomination of Origin of Mezcal to be given to the four municipalities in southern Sinaloa.

“ On the subject of mezcal from Sinaloa, there is already a formal decision that we are going to be able to sell our agave as mezcal, we had already won the Denomination of Origin, but there was a legal issue with the producers from Oaxaca, but it has already been won. This is another very good news for Mazatlán, because it is an industry focused on the south of the state, ” he said.

He announced that he will soon contact agave producers in Sinaloa, especially in the four municipalities that achieved their denomination of origin, San IgnacioMazatlánConcordia and Rosario, and thus launch promotion strategies.

Gaxiola Coppel expressed that this will enhance the economy of the south of the state, especially this agave industry that, for years, despite its high production, could not be sold as tequila or mezcal.

MEZCAL CONSUMPTION GROWTH

He commented that this news opens marketing expectations for producers since the consumption of mezcal is increasing faster than tequila and the most important market is the United States.

“ Mezcal consumption is growing faster per year than tequila consumption and tequila consumption is growing more than whiskey in the United States markets, in Mexico we have a lot of potential with mezcal,” he said.

It was last October 2021 that the federal government officially announced the appellation of origin of mezcal for the production of agave from 4 of the 18 municipalities of Sinaloa, modifying the General Declaration of Protection of the Designation of Origin Mezcal.

Currently, in addition to Sinaloa, the use of the Designation of Origin for Mezcal includes regions of the states of Guerrero, Durango, San Luis Potosí, Zacatecas, and Oaxaca.
