With the peak of hurricane season — Sept. 10 — only days away, the National Hurricane Center is monitoring four systems in the Atlantic: Hurricane Danielle, Tropical Storm Earl, and two tropical waves.

While Hurricane Danielle is expected to begin weakening in the northern Atlantic, Tropical Storm Earl is showing signs of soon becoming a hurricane and could become the Atlantic season’s first major hurricane by the end of the week.

A storm is considered a major hurricane once winds reach 111 mph, making it a category 3 hurricane.

If both storms are hurricanes, it’ll be the first time there has been more than one hurricane at the same time in the Atlantic since 2020, according to AccuWeather.

On Sept. 16, 2020, the Atlantic basin saw Hurricane Paulette, Hurricane Sally, and Hurricane Teddy at the same time.

A tropical wave off the coast of Africa currently has a 60% chance of developing over the next five days and could become a tropical depression over the next few days.

Another tropical wave is forecast to move off the coast off Africa has a low chance of development over the coming week.
