Another catholic priest attacked with a weapon in Mexico

The priest Felipe Vélez Jiménez was attacked with fire power at the point known as Los Claveles, in Chilapa, in the Mexican state of Guerrero, one of the most violent Mexican regions historically.

The Guerrero State Attorney General’s Office reported that around 12:20 p.m. on Thursday, July 28th, Father Vélez left the town of Chilapa heading to Chilpancingo aboard a truck, armed men attacked him with long weapons. The Catholic priest sustained a gunshot wound to the right cheekbone.

He was transferred to Chilpancingo -capital of the State of Guerrero- in serious but stable condition. Father Vélez is originally from Taxco (Guerrero) and is the parish priest of the parish of San Gerardo María Mayela, in Iguala.

According to the Centro Católico Multimedial, with the aggression of Father Vélez there are already seven cases of aggression against priests in Mexico, from 2018 to 2022, during the AMLO administration.
