After a two-year period, the Chetumal to Belize water transportation service was finally reopened. The water transportation service between the two countries restarted earlier this month.

The government of Quintana Roo reported the reactivation of the service, which they say, will run five days per week. Alicia Ricalde Magaña, the General Director of Administración Portuaria Integral de Quintana Roo (Apiqroo) says the boat that provides the transportation to Belize departs from the Apiqroo dock of Chetumal to two ports of Belize.

On July 6th, the first trip from the Chetumal dock bound for San Pedro was made. It set sail with 35 passengers and three crew and returned at 5:00 p.m.

The company will offer the service five days a week with 50-passenger capacity boats owned by the Mexican company Water Jet International. Ricalde Magaña detailed that the cost for a single trip is 1,300 pesos for adults and 1,105 pesos for children over the age of three to travel from Chetumal to San Pedro.

The cost to travel from the Chetumal dock to Cayo Caulker, Belize is 1,400 for adults and 1,109 pesos for children over the age of three. She says around 23,000 people use the service each year.

Ricalde Magaña says prior to the reactivation, the boat company had to comply with all the legal procedures necessary for the operation of its vessels to enter another country and also guarantee the safety of its passengers.
