To obtain a ticket to the wildcard game of the 2023 Australia-New Zealand World Cup, Mexico needed a miracle and this seemed to happen in Nuevo León, as Jamaica thrashed Haiti 4-0, setting up things for the Mexican Women’s National Team to defeat the United States by one goal, but in the end, that did not happen.

Those of Mónica Vergara played the entire game practically without losing. Hence, time was not enough for them when they tried to attack with only ten players in the final stretch of the match in the Universidad Autonoma de Nuevo León stadium, known as the Volcano.

And in a fast break, the world champion scored at 89′, for the final 1-0 that killed the hopes of the Mexican team who went blank in goals, losing all their three matches in the Concacaf W Championship.

This way, Mexico was left out not only of the 2024 Paris Olympics but also of any possibility to attend the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup.
