How Will Mexico Fare At The World Cup 2022

As you will expect, Mexico will head to Qatar later this year as one of the rank outsiders to lift the World Cup. They will be playing as one of the four teams in Group C, with their first fixture taking place on the 22nd of November. But just how well will they fare in the showpiece tournament?

The first thing to note where Mexico is concerned is that Group C is going to be tricky to get out of. The team, which Gerardo Martino manages, will be facing Poland, Argentina, and Saudi Arabia. And, if you check out World Cup betting odds online, Argentina is one of the favorites to win the whole thing. So, you could say that one of the qualifying spots in the group should already be out of bounds.

At the time of writing, how you’d expect Group C to play out is that Argentina will qualify, and then Mexico will battle it out with Poland for the second spot. Saudi Arabia are, again, according to betting odds, the team with the least chance of success at Qatar 2022. But the question is, does Mexico have what it takes to get the better of Poland? Because let’s face it, Poland does have one of the best strikers in the world in their ranks in Robert Lewandowski. And as it’s likely to be his final World Cup, he will be out to impress.

What Mexico lack and has lacked for a while are goals. And this could be their undoing. But there’s also an opportunity for this to be resolved in a fashion pre-tournament. Raul Jimenez has looked a shadow of his former self since sustaining a severe head injury, but if he can hit some kind of form for Wolves in the run-up to the World Cup, it could help to alleviate the goalscoring worries that El Tri has suffered in recent months. There’s also potentially another solution, but it’s going to take more talks to make it happen.

Martino and Mexican icon Javier Hernandez have reportedly started communicating again after Chicarito spent three years in the wilderness after violating team rules during a US trip back in 2019. There have long been calls for his return, as he’s the player the team can rely on at this moment to add some potency to the attacking line. And, if Hernandez is on the plane, he could prove to be the remedy El Tri needs. But it’s still a big if, and it remains to be seen whether the problems of the past can be resolved in time.

Mexico will likely struggle against Argentina and Poland regardless of Hernandez being welcomed back into the fold. They do have decent quality around the pitch, but if there’s nothing at the top end, it will again lead to a scarcity of goals. And it’s goals that win games, after all.
