National Hurricane Center forecasters are keeping an eye out for a tropical system that could develop later this week over the southwestern Caribbean.
“An area of low pressure is expected to develop by the middle part of this week over the southwestern Caribbean Sea,” the NHC said in its Sunday tropical update. “Some slow development of this system is possible while it drifts generally northwestward off the coasts of Nicaragua and Honduras.”
The hurricane center listed a 20 percent chance of a tropical depression forming from the system over the next five day.
This 2022 hurricane season has already seen its first named storm, Tropical Storm Alex. It formed from the remnants of the first Pacific storm of the season, Hurricane Agatha.
After Agatha made landfall in Mexico and its remnants moved in the Caribbean, the Hurricane Center classified the system as “Potential Tropical Cyclone One.” Its movement toward Florida prompted the hurricane center to issue tropical storm watches and warnings for Florida back on June 3. The system drenched South Florida before moving across the peninsula and finally becoming Tropical Storm Alex on June 5.
The next named storm of the 2020 Atlantic Hurricane Season will be Bonnie.
