Eight people drowned, including women and babies when a boat capsized in Guaymas, Sonora, authorities reported on June 6, 2022.
After the accident, attributed to “several imprudences”, the Secretary of the Navy and firefighters managed to rescue 11 people.
The events occurred on Sunday, June 5th, shortly before 3:00 p.m. local time, in front of the “Rodolfo Sánchez Taboada” fishing industrial park, in an area known as the Paraje Viejo.
The members of the same family were riding in a small boat that overturned due to the speed and the waves.
The boat “was for the exclusive use of fishing and not for the transfer of a large number of passengers, as it did not have seats or life jackets, and was not enabled for transporting tourists,” reported Civil Protection of the Government of Sonora.
Search and rescue agents from the Secretary of the Navy, Fourth Naval Region, eight members of the Fire Department, and Civil Protection in Guaymas participated in the rescue operation, who used two search and rescue vessels, a UH-60 helicopter with a crew of five people.
The authorities argued that the driver of the boat, who remains a missing person, ignored maritime security since he did not have radio communication and his crew did not notify the authorities that they were going out to sea.
“Apparently, the boat was taken without permission by the son of its owner, in order to take his relatives for a ride, and that is when the accident happened,” added Civil Protection.
51 years ago, on May 22, 1971, a similar accident occurred between the Ports of Guaymas and Empalme on the Douglas Bridge, when a boat manned by members of two families capsized, leaving 10 minors lifeless, in Sonora.
