Francisco Labastida, former governor of Sinaloa, questioned López Obrador’s repeated visits to Badiraguato, the cradle of the Sinaloa Cartel, where it can only be accessed “with protection from drug traffickers.”

The former PRI candidate for the Presidency, Francisco Labastida, assured that there are “indications that point to a very suspicious protection of the (federal) government over drug trafficking over the Sinaloa Cartel.”

In an interview with Aristegui en Vivo, the Sinaloan politician highlighted that in the three years he has been president, Andrés Manuel López Obrador has traveled to Badiraguato, Sinaloa, a town of 5,000 inhabitants, located in the cradle of the Sinaloa Cartel.

The also former governor of Sinaloa, stated that to access said town, located in the region known as “El Triángulo Dorado”, it can only be accessed “with protection from drug traffickers.”

He also highlighted the occasion in which the president, during a working visit to the area, greeted the mother of Joaquín ‘El Chapo’ Guzmán, founder of the Sinaloa Cartel.

“There may be very suspicious things behind there, but I don’t have enough evidence,” declared Francisco Labastida .

During the interview, he recalled that the area where the states of Sinaloa, Chihuahua, and Durango meet, has been consolidated as a territory controlled by drug producers and traffickers for 70 years, to the point where the United States asked Mexico to grow marijuana, “Because he was short of supplies of marijuana and opium gum to produce morphine during World War II. That is where drug trafficking is born .”

Labastida also criticized the results of the López Obrador administration, particularly in terms of health and public safety.

“In the field of security, from the instruction they have to give hugs and not bullets and to run when they are attacked, we are unfortunately very bad,” reproached Labastida, who considers that ” drug trafficking is the worst threat that the country currently has.”, and hopes that effective action will be taken to prevent narco politics from setting the tone for the 2024 elections.
