14.2 Million pesos collected by the state of Jalisco in Airbnb lodging taxes


Guadalajara, Jalisco – As a result of the Jalisco state government and hosting platform Airbnb reaching an agreement at the beginning of this year for the technology company to pay taxes to the entity, the state Public Treasury (Hacienda) has collected 14.2 million pesos for the Lodging Tax (ISH).

During Tuesday’s presentation of the consolidation of the Jalisco-Airbnb Comprehensive Alliance, the head of the Ministry of Tourism (Secturjal), Vanessa Pérez Lamas, indicated that in the month of February, the first month of collection of 3% of the ISH through the platform, the entity collected 6.8 million pesos, while in March the figure increased to 7.4 million.

He added that in Jalisco, the industry platforms that contribute to the ISH are Expedia and Airbnb, and Secturjal is negotiating with Booking.com, which are the companies that concentrate the largest number of accommodation properties.

According to Ángel Terral, the CEO of Airbnb in Mexico, Central America, and the Caribbean, currently, the platform collects and contributes to the ISH in nine states of the Republic: Baja California, Baja California Sur, Mexico City, State of Mexico, Oaxaca, Quintana Roo, Sinaloa, Yucatán, and Jalisco.

Meanwhile, at the federal level, since 2020 Income Tax (ISR) and VAT are also collected from all transactions that take place on the platform.

According to the director of the hosting technology company, in 2021 the average annual income of an Airbnb host in Jalisco was 300,000 pesos; more than 50% of the host community are women, and close to 10% are senior citizens.


The Integral Alliance that Jalisco and Airbnb consolidated is made up of five guiding axes. The first is the joint work in the analysis and design of public policy to promote innovative regulation. In this sense, the global platform and the Ministry of Tourism created a tax payment mechanism related to the needs of the region to simplify its collection.

The second pillar is the “Jalisco de mi Alma” promotional campaign, which was created jointly by Secturjal and Airbnb to reactivate tourism and promote different destinations to national and international travelers; The third axis is an Ambassadors Program to promote the tourism offer and the services of micro, small and medium-sized tourism enterprises (MSMEs) of the entity.

The fourth strategic axis is a pilot program to train Jalisco hosts and generate a greater number of face-to-face experiences in the state available on the platform.

Lastly, the exchange of information with Secturjal through the creation of a statistical portal called Portal de la Ciudad, so that the state agency can learn about tourism trends, traveler profiles, and other relevant data for the development and dissemination of the state’s tourism offer.
