There are different reasons that explain why Mexico has achieved these poor results, among which are the high sophistication of organized crime groups in that country, which are the most wanted in the world: ”The drug cartels control the territory in much of Mexico, co-opting the State through bribery and intimidation, with the aim of facilitating their illicit activities.” To this situation of control of the country by the mafias, we must add other frequent criminal activities in Mexico, such as human trafficking, arms trade, and different drugs such as heroin, and crimes against flora, fauna and resources. country natives.
In addition, the location of the country, which has long stretches of coastline, and the wealth of biodiversity present in Mexico, makes it an ideal environment for drug and human trafficking, in addition to the smuggling of species, which makes it rise in the world crime rankings.
In Mexico, we can find approximately 125 of the existing species on the planet, which makes it a very rich country and a focus of interest for the mafias that traffic in animals. Experts predict a huge crisis of biodiversity loss in the country, fueled especially by the high levels of national unemployment, which make many Mexicans see animal trafficking as an option to earn income. Among the exotic species that are most traded, the Yellow-headed Parakeet, the Scarlet Macaw, the green macaw, the yellow-breasted toucan, the spider monkey, and the howler monkey.
The level of control of the mafias with respect to the State is so great that it not only generates vulnerability to Mexican citizens, it also endangers the democratic quality of the country. Experts fear that organized crime could manipulate the elections due to the power vacuums of federal security authorities and the proximity to states such as Zacatecas, which holds the first position in terms of organized crime.
