AMLO suspends dialogue with activists who criticize the environmental damage of the Mayan Train

2038

The federal government reported the cancellation of the meeting between President Andrés Manuel López Obrador and representatives of the #SélvameDelTren protest, to discuss the Mayan Train, arguing that “several of the guests have publicly declared that they will not attend the National Palace.”

However, on social platforms, those mentioned thanked the opening to dialogue and asked that it be carried out in the area affected by the megaproject.

The federal government statement asks that the activists, artists and personalities of this movement visit that region of Quintana Roo and speak with residents, indigenous communities and families of ejidatarios who live along section 5 of the Mayan Train, which runs from Cancun to Tulum, along the Riviera Maya. “That way they will find out that the people were informed and consulted,” the statement says.

“Along the Mayan Train, people know about the project and community by community has been consulted; besides that its construction is carried out protecting the environment and archaeological heritage; and cenotes, underground rivers, and caverns will not be affected,” according to the government statement.

President López Obrador said in a morning conference that he was willing to talk at the National Palace with the “celebrities” who participated in the #SelvamedelTren campaign.

In a video, the members of the movement thanked the dialogue and asked that it take place in the affected area, even visiting the caves.

In an interview on Radio Formula, the actor Eugenio Derbez said that he could not attend the meeting because he is in the middle of a production, although he asked that the dialogue take place in the affected area.

The environmentalist Arturo Islas said that he did accept the dialogue, but said that he would bring advisers because they are also part of the movement:

The invitation to the National Palace of President López Obrador to the dialogue was made for those of us who appear in the video, he said that without advisers, I think he did not analyze well the video in which scientists and experts such as Medellín and Rojo also appeared, who are going to the meeting.

In this Sunday’s statement, the government defended the “consultation” process to seek the support of the peoples and the benefits it would have if it materializes. Below is the government’s view on the subject:

Two types of consultation were carried out, one with the indigenous communities of 118 municipalities in five states and another open consultation with citizens in 84 municipalities. One thousand 78 communities participated in the indigenous consultation, 15 informative and 15 consultative assemblies were held, made up of Mayans, Chols, Tzeltals and Tzotzils.

More than 100,000 citizens participated in the citizen consultation, of which 92.3 percent agreed with the Train. Here we share information that would be shown at the meeting:

The Mayan Train travels 1,554 kilometers through five states (Chiapas, Tabasco, Campeche, Yucatán, Quintana Roo), in 700 km it will be electric. During its construction, 108,495 jobs have been generated.

The change of transport of goods and passengers by train implies reducing 392 thousand tons of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere by 2030.

In the construction of the Mayan Train, the environment is taken care of and there will be 260 fauna crossings. Flora and fauna are rescued, in addition to the fact that there are 175 wildlife conservation units in which 105 specialists participate; In addition, protected natural areas and conservation reserves will be expanded in the regions involved.

In the five states where the train passes, 448,000 hectares will be reforested with 492 million trees (plus another 800,000 trees that will be planted along the track); for this there are four thousand community nurseries and six military ones.

With the participation of 292 archaeologists, there is a rescue and protection program for the archaeological heritage and two site museums will be created.

In the construction of section 5 of the Mayan Train –Cancún-Tulum– cenotes or underground rivers will not be affected. 300 hectares of acahual will be impacted. There is a rescue plan for flora and fauna, in addition to the planting of three trees for each removed.

The Mayan Train is more than a freight and passenger railway, it is a comprehensive sustainable development project that, in addition to protecting the environment, will expand opportunities for the population of the region in terms of economic development, education, health, housing. , infrastructure, culture, internet and sport. No more tourism and economic development with poverty belts.
