Texas Governor Greg Abbott met with the governor of Coahuila on Thursday, April 14th, to sign a similar agreement to the one Abbott already signed with the governor of Chihuahua. (Read the agreement between Abbott and Miguel Angel Riquelme Solis here).
Gov. Miguel Ángel Riquelme Solís of Coahuila state said in an interview with The Dallas Morning News that the snarled bridge traffic in his state is “dire,” with daily economic losses estimated at $8 million. Riquelme added that his state has stepped up operations along its border with Eagle Pass and Del Rio to better coordinate with U.S. officials on the problem of immigration.
“In reality, we don’t have the problem of security that he [Abbott] is talking about, but I look forward to speaking to the governor. We need to resume normal trade,” he said.
The specific agreement with Galván comes two days after the Chihuahuan governor issued a statement expressing concern over Abbott’s new policy and its impact on international trade through Mexico. She called on her other border counterparts to start a dialogue with Texas to address the issue.
“I am a faithful believer in dialogue and mediation; and I am sure that it is possible to promote better actions to strengthen the security of both sides of the border, without affecting the economy of Mexican and American families,” she said in the statement.
