AMLO circumvents legislators by signing lithium initiative, in case his Electricity Reform does not pass

“I just signed this morning the initiative to reform the Mining Law, which does not require two-thirds, it is a simple majority so that lithium remains the property of the Nation,” the president announced.

President Andrés Manuel López Obrador (AMLO) announced today that he has already signed the proposal to reform the Mining Law so that, in the event that the Electricity Reform is not approved on Sunday, it is presented immediately to establish that lithium can only be exploited by the Government of Mexico and belongs to Mexicans. As Lázaro Cárdenas did with oil or Adolfo López Mateos with electricity.

It is a plan B of the President of Mexico. Yesterday he recalled that a few days ago the Supreme Court of
Justice of the Nation (SCJN) declared the Electricity Industry Law constitutional. And if the necessary vote
for the approval of the reform is not reached, an initiative to modify the Mining Law will be sent
“immediately, the next day”, which requires only a simple majority to establish that lithium remains to be
exploited by the Mexican state. Today he repeated it and added: the initiative has already been signed.

The Government of Mexico requires two-thirds of the votes of the legislators for the Electrical Reform. That is, it requires opposition votes. But the Institutional Revolutionary Party (PRI), the National Action Party (PAN), and the Democratic Revolution Party (PRD) have already announced that all of their deputies will vote against it.

“Only a traitor hands over his country to foreigners. Speculating on the exclusive property and in perpetuity of our energy resources is treason to the Homeland”, said López Mateos on September 27, 1960. Yesterday in his report for the 100 days of the fourth year of Government and today in his morning conference, López Obrador repeated the condemnation of opposition legislators. He considered that voting against the Electric Law would be “treason.”

“If there are not two-thirds on Sunday, because the lobbyists, the coyotes, the foreign interests dominate; if there is betrayal by legislators, we already have. I just signed this morning the initiative to reform the Mining Law, which does not require two thirds. It is a simple majority so that lithium remains the property of the Nation”, he reported from the National Palace.

However, he insisted that he will wait to see what happens next Sunday in the Chamber of Deputies “and immediately the lithium initiative will come in.” “Nothing more so that the Mexicans know that they are not going to put us against the wall. No. The lithium that they covet, because I know, both corporations and foreign governments, is going to be from Mexico, ”he assured.

President López Obrador usually reads another part of López Mateos’ speech in public, which is a warning to the future: “Don’t be overconfident. In future years, some bad Mexicans, identified with the worst causes in the country, will again try to hand over the oil and our resources to foreign investors.”

And today the President also emphasized the lobbyists of foreign companies. He condemned the fact that the opposition sits down with them and recalled the episode two days ago, when the Deputy from Morena, Leonel Godoy, asked, prior to the vote in the Electricity Reform commissions, that a lobbyist who was He was sitting next to the PRD Deputy Edna Gisel Díaz.

The man was identified as Paolo Salerno, who is coordinator of the Energy Committee of the Italian Chamber of Commerce and advisor to the Italian electricity company Enel Group. In its social networks, the Morena party stated: “The opposition brought the Italian lobbyist Paolo Salerno to the plenary session of the Chamber! Salerno is coordinator of the Energy Committee of the Italian Chamber of Commerce, a partner of Enel, a company denounced by the CFE for the black market of self-supply”.

The coordinator of the Morena deputies, Ignacio Mier, shared the video of the moment in which Godoy showed that there was a lobbyist in the Sessions Hall, and wrote about it: “See the impudence of the PAN and PRD deputies receiving instructions of the negotiator of Enel Group, an Italian electricity company, in the chamber of sessions of the Chamber. The PAN-PRD employees of the money. What does the PRI think of this?
