AMLO proceed with more jungle destruction; Tulum airport moves forward without environmental studies or permits

Without having completed the required technical studies, the General Directorate of Engineers of the Ministry of National Defense (Sedena) is in charge of the construction of the Tulum International Airport (AIT), in the Caribbean tourist heart of Mexico.

The new air terminal in Tulum shares characteristics with the one built in Santa Lucía: short execution time, military installations, and participation of Sedena.

The works of the Tulum airport began. Military engineers who built the Felipe Ángeles International Airport (AIFA) in Santa Lucía, State of Mexico, traveled almost 1,500 kilometers so that President Andrés Manuel López Obrador (AMLO) gave the starting signal on March 3.

President Andrés Manuel López Obrador proposed that the New Tulum Airport be baptized Felipe Carrillo Puerto Airport, in honor of the revolutionary leader who “defended the Mayans against the aristocratic landowners.”

AMLO declara que el Aeropuerto de Tulum se inaugurará en el 2023

Although the detailed plan of what the project will be like in Quintana Roo has not yet been released, the technical specifications of the pre-investment studies, which began last year, allow us to take a look at the new air terminal, which shares characteristics with the recently inaugurated in the Metropolitan Zone of the Valley of Mexico.

  • As happened in the AIFA, the Secretary of National Defense (Sedena) will be in charge of building the project.
  • In Santa Lucía there were the facilities of the Military Air Base No.1, while in Tulum there is the Naval Air Base of Tulum, with a runway 1,820 meters long and 30 meters wide.
  • In Quintana Roo, as happened in the AIFA, not only will a civilian airport be built, but there will also be one for the Armed Forces, as well as a military city.
  • The construction will be directed by Gustavo Vallejo, a general who also took charge of Santa Lucía.
  • Little time to become a reality: in the AIFA a limit of fewer than three years was given, while the one in Tulum will have to be done in one.
  • The airport will also have a relevant figure from the Mexican Revolution: Felipe Carrillo Puerto.

Other keys of the Tulum airport

  • The pre-investment studies will cost a total of 246,413,075 pesos, according to the project portfolio of the Ministry of Finance and Public Credit (SHCP).
  • On January 20, 2022, AMLO announced the purchase of 1,200 hectares for construction.
  • The inauguration will be in December 2023.
  • It will require a total investment of 9,985,238,000 pesos.
  • In the PEF 2022, it was planned to invest 11,031 million pesos for the project.
  • It will have a 3,500-meter-long runway with 10-centimeter-thick pavement.
  • There will be commercial, general and cargo operations.
  • It will be located in Cobá, 130 kilometers from the Cancun airport.
