Puerto Vallarta, Mexico – The last Malecón Sculpture Tour of the 2021-2022 season will be held on Tuesday, April 12, resuming on November 15th. This has been the fifteenth season for the tour, which is free but which accepts voluntary donations for the Biblioteca Los Mangos Library and Cultural Center.

“Last year we were unable to do the tours because of government Covid restrictions, and this year the attendance was down from pre-pandemic levels, but we were able to complete our mid-November to mid-April season. It is hoped the next season will bring more normal times and that attendance will rebound along with a proportionate increase in donations to Biblioteca Los Mangos,” said Galería Pacifico owner Gary Thompson, who leads the tours.

This season’s last tour begins on Tuesday, April 12 at 9:30 am in front of the “Millennium” sculpture, next to the Hotel Rosita at the north end of the Malecón in downtown Puerto Vallarta. From there, the tour winds along the Malecón, with Gary explaining the artist and history behind about 16 artworks. He also points out minute details that you might have otherwise missed, giving you a deeper understanding of the significance of each sculpture.

Gary’s personal experiences and interactions with the sculptors, as well as his numerous personal friendships with many of Vallarta’s other artists, make the walk both entertaining and educational. The tour is free, but donations are gratefully accepted to the benefit of our public library, Biblioteca Los Mangos.

“I think it is an amazing project,” commented Thompson. “As a non-profit organization, Los Mangos receives next to no support from the local government. In addition, I think it’s important for all of us to give back to our community. I am very mindful of this, given that I’ve enjoyed more than half my life in this wonderful city.”
