The Fray Bartolomé de las Casas Human Rights Center (Frayba) pointed out that the authorities must ensure that “there are no omissions in the collection of evidence and in the follow-up of the logical lines of investigation” at the hearing, which will take place next March 28 in Cintalapa.

Simón Pedro was a catechist in the parish of Santa Catarina in the municipality of Pantelhó, a member of the Las Abejas de Acteal Civil Society Organization (Las Abejas de Acteal) and a human rights defender. He was assassinated on July 5, 2021, after denouncing the omission of the Mexican State in the face of violence caused by organized crime groups.

The Frayba recalled that days after the murder, “thanks to the demand for justice at the national and international levels”, the material author of the murder of Simón Pedro was arrested and is deprived of his liberty at the State Center for Social Reintegration for Sentenced Number 14 “El Amate”, but the judicial process around the case has not yet ended.
