TEPOZTLAN, MORELOS.- The National Guard, the Secretary of the Navy (Semar), brigade members of the National Forestry Commission (Conafor), and volunteers continue to fight a forest fire in Cerro de La Mesa, in Tepoztlán, which has consumed 37 hectares since it began early Tuesday morning.

This Wednesday morning, the GN and Semar personnel joined the combat tasks by air to put out the fire that started in the area of Los Cajons.

Laura Velázquez Alzua, National Coordinator of Civil Protection estimated that the incident will be controlled by Wednesday afternoon, but its extinction has been prolonged.

In that sense, she assured that action is being taken on time since last year there were 300 hectares damaged by a fire in the same area.

150 brigade members from Conafor, Civil Protection, the National Guard, and volunteers are fighting this fire, which gained strength last night and spread towards the Tepozteco pyramid, although the flames have not reached the archaeological zone.

According to Morelos State authorities, the fire would have been started by a small campfire that got out of control and spread to the nearby vegetation.

It was reported that a person apparently under the influence of some substance was arrested, who would be responsible for lighting the fire.
