The image of the man pointing the gun at her has circulated on social networks, where they ask for justice for Paula.
In Mexico, a woman, identified as Paula Ruiz, was shot dead in the city of San Cristóbal de las Casas, in the state of Chiapas, in the southwest of the country.
Seconds before she was shot, Ruiz, 41, took a photo of her assailant as he pointed the gun at her. The image has circulated on social networks, where users ask for justice for Paula.
The incident occurred on Crescencio Rosas Avenue last Saturday night, around 11:00 p.m. [local time], when her son went to look for her at the hotel where she worked as a receptionist.
According to the young man’s account, quoted by Debate, he parked the motorcycle on the avenue and went to look for his mother at work. When they both left, they did not find the motorcycle, they started looking and saw a man who was taking the unit through some nearby streets, where an alleged accomplice was waiting for him.
Ruiz and his son confronted the criminals to demand that they return the motorcycle, but one of them pulled out a gun and shot him at chest height. The woman managed to take the picture of her when she was pointing the gun at him.
People who were passing through the place asked 911 for help and elements of Civil Protection arrived at the site to give him first aid.
Ruiz was transferred to the Hospital de las Culturas de San Cristóbal de las Casas, where her death was confirmed. Doctors reported that she lost her life before reaching the health center early Sunday morning.
ASK FOR JUSTICE
The hashtag #JusticiaParaPaula was positioned on social networks to demand conviction for the aggressors, publishing the photograph that the victim took of the offender before being shot.
The 50+1 Collective made up of women politicians, academics, and specialists from different areas, issued a statement expressing their “consternation and indignation” at this “cunning and cowardly” murder.
According to the organization, Ruiz leaves behind four children.
“We make a respectful, but energetic call to the federal, state and municipal authorities to create security conditions in Chiapas, which guarantee women —as a group in a vulnerable situation— the exercise of their right to life and to enjoy it free from any kind of violence”, says the 50+1 Collective statement.
