Meet the Mexicans nominated for the Oscar 2022

Guillermo del Toro and Carlos López Estrada are the Mexican directors competing for the Oscar in the category of Best Picture and Best Animated Picture, respectively.

The announcement of the nominees for the 94th edition of the Oscar brought great and unexpected surprises for our country. This year two Mexicans have been nominated for the 2022 Oscars. They are  Guillermo del Toro for his film noir El alley of lost souls and Carlos López Estrada for the animated film  Raya and the last dragon.

The Oscar winner for  The Shape of Water returns after a four-year absence to position himself as one of the contenders for the golden statuette in the  Best Picture category for the film adaptation of  The Alley of Lost Souls. The film competes with  Kenneth Branagh’s BelfastThe Power of the Dog, by Jane Campion; Dun a, by Denis Villeneuve; Love without barriers, by Steven Spielberg; Licorice Pizza, by Paul Thomas Anderson; CODA: Signs of the Heart, by Sian Heder; King Richard: A Winning Family, by Reinaldo Marcus Green; don’t look up, by Adam McKay and  Drive My Car, by Ryusuke Hamaguchi.

Although the Mexican filmmaker was not included in the shortlist for Best Direction,  The Alley of Lost Souls is also a candidate in the categories of  Best Production Design  (Tamara Deverell and Shane Vieau),  Best Costume Design  (Luis Sequeira) and Best Photography. (Dan Laustsen).

Carlos Lopez Estrada

Mexican director  Carlos López Estrada  (son of TV producer Carla Estrada) also got an Oscar nomination in the category of  Best Animated Film for his work on  Raya y el ultimo dragon.  The filmmaker co-directed the film alongside Don Hall ( Big Hero 6 ) and John Ripa.

Raya and the last dragon  shares the list with 4 films:

  • Charm, by Jared Bush and Byron Howard 
  • Flee, by Monica Hellström and Signe Byrge Sørensen
  • The Mitchell family vs. The Machines, by Michael Rianda 
  • Luca, by Enrico Casarosa 

Carlos López Estrada was born in Mexico City on September 12, 1988. His career began as an actor in the telenovelas  Las dos caras de Ana  and  Pasión . However, he was clear that his career was not in front of the cameras, but behind them. He moved to the United States to graduate from Chapman University in California.

Currently, Carlos López Estrada has just over 40 credits as a director, most of them directing music videos for artists such as Noel Schajris, Capital Cities, Cuco and  Katy Perry. However, he has also directed several short films and debuted with his first feature film  De él Punto blind in 2018.

What is  Raya and the Last Dragon about ?

In 2021, the film  Raya and the Last Dragon  (on Disney Plus) was released, which became the first Disney animated film to represent characters from Southeast Asia, and not only that, it is the first film to have a princess as the protagonist. Asian, voiced in English by actress  Kelly Marie Tran. While  Danna Paola was in charge of dubbing the character in Spanish.

The story takes place in the fantastic kingdom of Kumandra, where humans and dragons lived together in the past, until they were attacked by a strange race of monsters called the Druun. The dragons had to sacrifice their lives to save humanity. Years later, the Druun appear again and a warrior named Raya must find the last dragon to save the world and stop the Druun forever.

Finally mention the Mexican,  Fausto Estrada Guerrero  ( Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse ), who is part of the team of directors of the film  The Mitchell family vs. The Machines, also nominated for an Oscar in the category of  Best Animated Film.

Unfortunately,  Night of Fire, by Tatiana Huezo, was left out of the shortlist for  Best International Film to represent Mexico. The category includes  The Worst person in the World by Joachim Trier (Norway); Drive My Car, by Ryûsuke Hamaguchi (Japan); Flee, by Jonas Poher Rasmussen (Denmark); The Hand of God, by Paolo Sorrentino (Italy) and  Lunana: A Yak In the Classroom, by Pawo Choyning Dorji (Bhutan).

For his part,  Eugenio Derbez was not considered to be part of the shortlist for  Best Supporting Actor for CODA: Signals of the Heart. However, the film competes in the category of  Best Picture.

In the Best Picture category, del Toro’s film will be measured against the following films:
