Ricardo Anaya explained why Mexico economic collapse was not a consequence of COVID

The deterioration of the economy began months before the arrival of the virus in the country

The former presidential candidate, Ricardo Anaya Cortés, came out to deny the arguments with which the president, Andrés Manuel López Obrador (AMLO), has defended his government in the face of the fall in the economy.

On January 31, the National Institute of Statistics and Geography ( INEGI ) estimated a 0.1% drop in the Mexican economy during the fourth quarter of 2021, which added two consecutive quarters with negative figures.

With this, the body was able to confirm that the country had fallen into a recession in the second half of the year. However, in López Obrador’s position, the COVID-19 pandemic has been pointed out as the main cause of the said decline.

For this reason, the politician assured that the collapse was the product of the mismanagement of AMLO and not because of the arrival of the virus, supporting his statement with three arguments.“The economic crisis we are experiencing could be seen coming and it is AMLO’s fault. Blaming only the pandemic is lying.

On February 2, the Chief Executive pointed out that the decrease referred to by the INEGI derived from the emergence of the new variant of the coronavirus, Omicron, which prevented reaching the 6% growth estimated for 2021, he declared.

However – and in the first instance – the National Action (PAN) militant asserted that the economic deterioration had begun months before the appearance of the virus and, therefore, its arrival in Mexico.

For his second point, the blue and white made an analogy of the economic growth that nations like the United StatesColombia and Chile registered after coming out of the crisis. A fact that he criticized, Mexico “has not achieved.”

“Despite the pandemic, they (the United States) are already growing again. And we? Turns out we don’t. (…) We are still far below when the pandemic started, “he detailed.

And lastly, Anaya denied the statement where Andrés Manuel presumed that the country was the only one that did not acquire external debt during 2020.“That is also a lie. With López Obrador, the debt has increased by 2.3 billion pesos. And they are official figures from his government.”

In that vein, the Morenoist’s position that Mexico guaranteed equality, development, and well-being, even with the recession, also struck: “Inflation, sky-high prices, poverty, unemployment… Is that what you call well-being?”.

Faced with this scenario – and as has been the custom in his latest deliveries – Anaya Cortés put forward five proposals to stop López Obrador’s “disaster”.

The first, to give certainty to investors, the first step being the cancellation of the controversial Electricity Reform – before which, it should be noted, he had already called on the opposition to resist and avoid its approval.

Second and third, combat corruption within the Government without exception, as well as the wave of violence that plagues various entities of the Republic with security strategies and without the idea of ”hugs, not bullets.”

As a fourth point, the politician called for respecting the scientific community and investing in quality research and education. And finally, promote clean energy with an eye to the future – this, echoing his earlier proposal to stop supporting the “obsolete” oil industry.“Enough of excuses. Mexico must and can grow. We just need to correct the course and do the right thing.”
