TIJUANA BC JANUARY 20, 2022 (AFN).- Starting next Saturday, January 22, the United States Department of Homeland Security (DHS) will require non-US persons who want to enter that country, through its borders with Mexico, your proof of vaccination against COVID-19.
Through a statement, the agency mentioned that this measure is due to the increase in the number of positive cases of COVID in the neighboring country, and said requirements will be required at all land entry points and ferry terminals.
These new restrictions will apply to people outside the United States traveling for essential and non-essential reasons. They will not apply to US citizens, lawful permanent residents, or US citizens.
“Effective January 22, 2022, the Department of Homeland Security will require those non-U.S. persons entering the United States through land ports of entry or ferry terminals along our northern and southern borders, be fully vaccinated against COVID-19 and are prepared to show proof of related vaccination,” said Alejandro Mayorkas, Secretary of Homeland Security.
The release added that non-U.S. persons traveling to the United States through land ports of entry or ferry terminals, whether for essential or non-essential reasons, will be required to verbally certify their COVID-19 vaccination status.
They will also provide proof of a vaccine approved by the Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), these being Johnson & Johnson, Pfizer, Moderna, AstraZeneca, Covaxina, Coviescudo, Sinopharm, Sinovac, and Novavax. /Covovax, as established on its website.
The document also indicates that a negative COVID-19 test will not be required, so only the document that proves vaccination will be valid.
Land/ferry travel to the United States
Foreign travelers entering the United States through the land border and ferry terminal ports of entry will be allowed to enter for a non-essential reason (i.e., tourism), provided they are fully vaccinated and can present proof of their vaccination status against COVID-19. Until January 2022, unvaccinated travelers may continue to cross the land border for essential travel only, including legal trade, emergency response, and public health purposes. Beginning in January 2022, all incoming foreign travelers crossing United States land ports of entry (POE) or ferry terminals, whether for essential or non-essential reasons, must be fully vaccinated against COVID-19 and provide proof of vaccination accordingly.
U.S. citizens and Lawful Permanent Residents (LPRs) may enter through land ports of entry or by ferry, regardless of vaccination status, and are not required to show proof of a negative COVID-19 test.
Negative COVID-19 Test Waiver and Proof of Vaccination Waiver Requests: The criteria for waivers are narrow and the urgency of travel must be evident. Unvaccinated nonimmigrants who do not fall within one of the limited exceptions may not enter the United States by air or land. Travelers who do not have a negative COVID-19 test who cannot show proof of the CDC exemption will not be allowed to board the plane.
