Based on article 27 of the Political Constitution and the Expropriation Law, the Secretariat of Agrarian, Territorial and Urban Development (Sedatu), through the Official Gazette of the Federation (DOF), announced the expropriation of 198 properties in Quintana Roo for the construction of the Mayan Train.

The DOF details that with the expropriation, the 4T “has the right to transfer ownership of them to individuals, constituting private property and that expropriations can only be done for reasons of public utility and through compensation.”

The AHRM trusts that through dialogue and negotiation the tourism sector will be affected as little as possible and progress will be made in this priority project.

The Association of Hotels of the Riviera Maya ( AHRM ) revealed that in the expropriation of land that the federal government seeks to carry out in Quintana Roo to be used in the Mayan Train, companies in the sector will be affected, for which it requested meetings to reach agreements that benefit both parties.

In a statement, he indicated that as an association they will be aware of this expropriation process and although the agreements will be taking place in a particular way between owners and authorities, they will be ready to provide the necessary support to their associates involved in this declaration.

“We are confident that agreements can be reached based on dialogue and negotiation. Among those affected are major hotel chains, ” the AHRM stated.

This Monday, the Ministry of Territorial and Urban Agrarian Development ( Sedatu) declared the development of the Mayan Train in the municipalities of Benito Juárez, Solidaridad, and Puerto Morelos, in Quintana Roo, to be of public utility, with which they seek to expropriate 198 privately owned properties, that comprise an area of two million 410 thousand 107.72 square meters, for the construction of said work.

The AHRM trusts that through dialogue and negotiation the tourism sector will be affected as little as possible and progress will be made in this project that will trigger regional development.

The business organization indicated that they hope to have meetings with the new general director of the National Fund for the Promotion of Tourism (Fonatur), Javier May Rodríguez, to work on the same path of advancement of the railway project.

In recent days, the AHRM reported that 90 percent of the businessmen were willing to sell their land for the Mayan Train, so before the expropriation, they request that the agreements that had already been reached be privileged.

Interested parties will have 15 business days from the notification or the second publication in the Official Gazette of the Federation to state before Sedatu “what is convenient for their right and interest and present the evidence they deem pertinent to prove their right”.
