Mexico is heading towards energy self-sufficiency, projecting that by 2023 and 2024 100 percent of Mexican crude will be refined in the country, said Octavio Romero Oropeza, head of Petróleos Mexicanos (Pemex).

“By 2023 and by 2024 all of Pemex’s production will be processed, it will be refined, because the Dos Bocas refinery and the Cangrejera project will come into operation, practically 100 percent of Mexican crude will be refined in our country to guarantee the supply of fuels ”, he specified.

When presenting the decalogue that Pemex will follow in the remainder of the López Obrador administration in order to stabilize the price of fuels, the head of the Mexican parastatal explained the distribution model of liquid hydrocarbons to the National Refining System (SNR) that will allow the country to be self-sufficient in energy matters.

As of 2022, the Deer Park refinery will be incorporated into the SNR, and in 2023 the Dos Bocas and Cangrejera refinery; It is estimated that 2023 and 2024 will produce 858 thousand barrels of gasoline, 542 thousand barrels of diesel and leave the entire SNR at 86 percent of its use.

The project presented by Pemex also estimates that by 2024, the Mexican parastatal will meet 49 percent of the demand for fertilizers.

In the case of AgroNitrogenados, in addition to the credit for the purchase, Pemex invested 104 million dollars in the rehabilitation of plants. Romero Oropeza indicated that in this administration the rehabilitation process continued and in October 2020 the production of urea began; currently, it produces 20.3 thousand tons per month.
