In 2020, Mexico, after India with 17.9 million people, was the country that had the most emitters of migrants in the world, with 11.2 million.

According to the birthplace of international migrants, Russians also left their land the most, with 10.8 million; China, with a little less, expelled 10.5 million and the Syrians were 8.5 million.

The United States was consolidated as the main destination country for international migrants in 1970, with more than 58 million residents in 2020 born abroad, reported the International Organization for Migration (IOM) and this country is the main destination for those who leave their home in Mexico.

According to the 2021 Migration and Remittances Yearbook of the Mexican government, Conapo, and the BBVA Foundation, the pandemic expelled more Mexicans to the United States. This document indicates that last year the main migratory corridor was that of our neighbor to the north, with 3.9 percent of world migration and 10.9 million migrants.

With the results of the Report on Migration in the World 2022, during the year 2000, North America had a total of 40.4 million international migrants; 20 years later, it presented a considerable increase of 18 million, reporting about 58.7 million, equivalent to 21 percent of the world population in 2020.

The factors that determine migration, according to the organization, can be voluntary or forced, the latter being “the result of disasters, economic crises and situations of extreme poverty or conflict, the magnitude and frequency of which continue to increase.”

Associated with the United Nations, IOM estimated approximately 280.6 million international migrants globally during the first half of 2020.

This figure represents 3.6 percent of the world population and maintains an upward trend since in 2000 there were 173.2 million and in 2010 there were about 221 million.

Germany is the second country in the world that welcomed the most migrants last year, with 15.8 million people; followed by Saudi Arabia (13.5 million), Russia (11.6 million), and the United Kingdom (9.4 million).

In the framework of International Migrants Day celebrated on December 18, the IOM highlighted that by their very nature, the complex dynamics of migration and international mobility can never be fully measured, understood, and regulated.

“However, as the World Migration Report 2022 shows, there is a body of data and information that is continually growing and improving, which can help us gain a better understanding of the key aspects of migration. migration in increasingly uncertain times ”, the study pointed out.
