US Border Patrol agent dies in the line of duty near the Arizona-Sonora border

A U.S. Border Patrol agent in the Tucson area died in the line of duty early in the week.

Supervisory Patrol Agent Martin Barrios died on Monday. Officials have not released further information regarding what caused Martin’s death.

U.S. Border Patrol Chief Raul Ortiz announced the death in a tweet. “Please keep his family, friends, and colleagues in your thoughts,” the tweet read.

Chief Patrol Agent of the Tucson Border Control Sector John R. Modlin shared his condolences Friday morning.

“Our thoughts and prayers are with his loved ones. We will always remember his service,” the post read.

Troy Miller, the Acting Commissioner of U.S. Customs and Border Protection, said Martin joined the Border Patrol in April 2003, after previously serving in the Navy. Martin is survived by his wife, children, and sisters, he said.
