From 2015 to 2020, 1,962 minors and adolescents between the ages of zero and 17 were victims of homicide. Four out of 10 crimes occurred on the streets and highways of Mexico.
In October 2021, the case of Fátima, a 12-year-old girl who was murdered in 2015 in the State of Mexico, came to life again. After a six-year trial, one of the murderers was sentenced to life imprisonment. The injuries inflicted on Fatima were heartbreaking, her assailants subdued her in the street, just 100 meters from her house.
It sounds scary, but the reality is that in Mexico girls are not safe on the streets or in their homes. From 2015 to 2020, more than 700 minors were murdered on public roads and 558 in their own homes, according to an analysis made to the Inegi figures.
The mere fact of being between 15 and 17 years old, being a woman, and living in Mexico gives you a 36% chance of being a victim of femicide, says Juan Martín Pérez, director of the Network for Children’s Rights in Mexico (Redim).
When analyzing the Inegi figures, more than twenty forms were found that show the level of violence to which more than 300 girls are subjected per year in the country. And there is a revealing pattern: girls between the ages of zero and two and those between the ages of 13 and 17 are the most vulnerable; the smaller the victims, the crueler the mechanics of death.
