Members of the Mexico-European Union Joint Parliamentary Commission expressed their concern about the constitutional reform in the electricity sector in Mexico, promoted by President Andrés Manuel López Obrador and analyzed in Congress.

Co-chair of the Mexico-European Union Joint Parliamentary Commission, Massimiliano Smeriglio, pointed out to Mexican senators:

«I have to point out, with the utmost respect, the problems that our Embassies hear and that European companies that have invested in Mexico over the years, that it is necessary to discuss, deepen and clarify, because we also want to understand what is going to happen with the reform of the energy system, because it is a very sensitive issue for our countries and for the European Union as well ”.

In the framework of a meeting with the president of the Senate Board of Directors, Olga Sánchez Cordero, MEP Smeriglio explained that the issue is very sensitive.

He recalled that it is related to international agreements in areas such as climate change, sustainability, legal certainty, and human rights.

“These are issues that refer to Mexico, but also to our countries, because it is very important for us to reiterate a mechanism of symmetrical, reciprocal friendship.”

For his part, the president of the Senate Political Coordination Board, Ricardo Monreal, greeted this delegation whose primary objective is to exchange views on interparliamentary relations and on key issues of the Mexico-European Union alliance, such as climate change and the migration that involves the economic issue wherever it is seen.

“The ties between the European Union and Mexico have been forged in long processes of cultural, socioeconomic and political exchange,” said the Senator.
