Under Biden administration, CBP detains a record number of migrants at the border with Mexico

More than 1.7 million people were arrested last year, including 145 thousand unaccompanied children

It is the highest number ever recorded. The United States published a number of detainees along its border with Mexico in the last 12 months. more than 1.7 million migrants.

Of these, more than a million were expelled to Mexico or their countries of origin, according to US Customs and Border Protection data.

Agents detained migrants from more than 160 countries.

Recently, images of border agents on horseback chasing migrants in the US generated controversy.

The popularity of President Joe Biden in opinion polls has been sinking, partly as a result of its immigration policy.

Only 35% of Americans approved of his handling of the issue.

This was revealed by a survey by the Associated Press-NORC Public Affairs Research Center earlier this month.

Biden promised a more humane immigration policy than his predecessor Donald Trump, but the U.S.-Mexico border has been mired in crisis for much of the Democratic presidency.

The arrest figures for the fiscal year 2021, which ended in September, are the highest since 2000.

That year, more than 1.6 million migrants were detained at the US-Mexico border.

But since records began in the 1960s, the number had never reached 1.7 million.

“A large number of expulsions during the pandemic has contributed to a larger than the usual number of migrants making multiple attempts to cross the border,” said US Customs and Border Protection.

Unaccompanied children

Those who tried to enter the United States illegally were mainly from Mexico, Guatemala, Honduras, and El Salvador.

Of all those detained, the largest category were adults traveling without children: more than 1.1 million (or 64%).

At the same time, US authorities said they encountered more than 145,000 unaccompanied children, a record number.

Almost 11,000 of those children were still in government custody at the end of October.

The US government is receiving a growing number of migrant arrivals at the border these days.

A BBC investigation of the Fort Bliss detention center in Texas earlier this year revealed reports of sexual abuse, covid outbreaks, and head lice.

Also, starving children were served undercooked meat, and sandstorms engulfed desert tent camps where young people were being held.

For Republicans, the increase in the numbers is due to Biden’s promises to establish a process that leads to citizenship for immigrants.

Biden has faced questions this week about why he hasn’t visited the border.

The White House press secretary told reporters on Friday that the president traveled there in 2008 when he was campaigning to be Barack Obama’s vice president.
