The police officer of San Isidro Roaguía, Marcos Martínez Grijalva, announced the reopening of the tourist hostel of the petrified waterfalls of Hierve el Agua on October 13, after a year and seven months of being closed due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

In a press conference, he said that on October 3, the community assembly agreed to reopen the tourist center, because Oaxaca is on an epidemiological green traffic light; They also argued that tourism is the main economic activity for this population of around 350 inhabitants.

In addition, approximately 80% of the population is already vaccinated against Covid-19, which gives them greater security, they affirmed.

The parador, he explained, is the main source of work since the community alone has around 120 stalls where food, drinks and handicrafts are sold, among others; in addition to businesses or stores within the community.

With the reopening, adequate sanitary measures will be established to prevent infections and a permitted capacity of 200 people per day was established.

One of the novelties is that national and foreign tourists will be able to enjoy a new natural spring of water that was born about two years ago and with which a pool was built.

Marcos Martínez asked the tourism agencies to present themselves no later than Tuesday, October 12, with the documentation that accredits them as legally constituted companies and to have the permits from the Ministry of Communications and Transportation (SCT), for the safety of tourists.

Likewise, he mentioned that three travel agencies are prohibited from accessing the tourist inn, among them the so-called El Andador, for having wronged the community; this one, in particular, he reported, has filed between 12 and 14 lawsuits against the authorities after refusing to pay for parking.

He also clarified that the state governor, Alejandro Murat Hinojosa, the General Secretariat of Government (Segego), the Oaxaca Health Services (SSO), and the Ministry of Economy have already been informed of the restart of activities in Hierve el Agua.

While Caminos y Aeropistas de Oaxaca (CAO) promised to lend machinery for the repair of the Mitla-Xaagá-Hierve el Agua Road, the only access to the population and the authorities will spend on diesel and hiring an operator of machinery.
