In September, General Motors produced 20,619 cars in Mexico, which represented almost three-quarters less than what it produced during the same month of the previous year, according to data from the Mexican Association of the Automotive Industry (AMIA).

The depletion of chips has forced various closures in plants in Mexico, which has caused pronounced falls in the assembly of cars in the country, said Fausto Cuevas, general director of the AMIA, in a press conference.

The sixth most valuable assembler in the world has four plants in Mexico. One in Toluca, where he is dedicated to building engines, as well as one in Ramos Arizpe, Coahuila; Silao, in Guanajuato, and in San Luis Potosí.

Another model that had a noticeable reduction in its production in Mexico between September of last year and the same month of 2021 was the Jetta, from Volkswagen.

The German company reported the manufacture of 5,300 cars of this model in the ninth month of this year, against 13,368 in September 2020.

Fausto Cuevas predicted that the automotive industry will regain its pre-pandemic level by 2024.
