The one also called Citlaltépetl now belongs to the poblanos, according to INEGI.

The famous Pico de Orizaba volcano no longer belongs to the state of Veracruz. The reason? It was attributed to Puebla because a greater part of its extension is located in the latter entity.

This is due to recategorization carried out by the National Institute of Statistics and Geography (INEGI).

According to the “Registry of Continental, Insular Geographical Names and the Forms of the Submarine Relief”, the volcano also called Citlaltépetl now belongs to Puebla.

Located between the limits of Veracruz and Puebla, Monte de la Estrella, as it is also known, is an inactive volcano whose height is 5,610 meters above sea level.

The “Registry of Continental, Insular Geographical Names and the Forms of the Submarine Relief” is a system for consulting the geographical names of spatial objects located in the country.

Veracruz not only lost the Citaltépetl , but when another recategorization of one of the elements of its relief was made, the Naucampatepetl volcano , known as Cofre de Perote , is now a hill.

In a statement, Inegi indicated that the Registry of Continental, Island Geographic Names and the Forms of the Underwater Relief for statistical and geographical purposes , is a system that Inegi generated to have a national platform that allows the registration, updating, protection , consultation and dissemination of standardized geographical names of continental and island space objects and forms of the underwater relief.

Geographical names are classified into six classes of continental and island space objects and 247 generic terms. Each name is associated with a geographic location and a series of attributes that enrich its information.

The registry is constantly updated to guarantee the integration and conservation of geographical names, due to the importance and role they play in the history and evolution of societies, since geographical names are considered as part of the cultural heritage and historical heritage. of the towns.

As of September 24, 2021, the Registry has 2 million 134 thousand 996 geographical names, of which 1 million 876 thousand 372 have been standardized and are available on the Inegi website.
