Mario Vargas Llosa, in full Jorge Mario Pedro Vargas Llosa, (born March 28, 1936, Arequipa, Peru), Peruvian Spanish writer whose commitment to social change is evident in his novels, plays, and essays. In 1990 he was an unsuccessful candidate for president of Peru.
“For his mapping of the structures of power and his sharp images of the resistance, rebellion, and defeat of the individual,” the Swedish Academy awarded him the Nobel Prize for Literature in 2010.
The writer described President Andrés Manuel López Obrador as a populist; he also regretted that “at this point in time” Spain is asked to apologize for the Conquest of Mexico.

In addition, the writer described the President as a populist and regretted that he asked Spain to apologize for the Conquest in Mexico.
“He has shown that he is a populist, do not tell me that it is not comical, absurd. At this point asking Spain to pay the costs of what was the Conquista de México, is something completely absurd, it is nothing but populist talking to manipulate the minds of ignorant people making them believe that he is demanding justice”, Vargas Llosa explained.
He even classified populism as an exaggeration, “he is a man who uses easily adulterate images, an opportunist.”
On the positive aspects of the arrival of the Spaniards in Latin America, the writer listed that it is the unifying of the Spanish language and religion, in addition to linking us with Europe, a continent that “produced us freedom, produced our democracy.”
He also regretted that no country in Latin America, including Mexico, has assumed the responsibility of giving the Indians the social and economic status “that they should have” and added that “we continue to discriminate and exploit them.”
When questioned if Mexico is on the way to a dictatorship, Vargas Llosa replied that it was not, since in the last election in the country “awareness” was demonstrated.
“I think that the Mexican context is not for a dictatorship, like the one exercised by the PRI, for example,” he said.
In addition, he criticized that the head of the federal Executive invited the president of Cuba, Miguel Díaz-Canel, in the framework of the 200 years of Independence in Mexico.
“That the President, in the 200 years of Independence, invites a Cuban president to come and deliver a speech does not make much sense either, it is also a populist thing, frankly in bad taste,” he said.
He also described that López Obrador gives small gestures that place him “in what he believes is the right direction for history,” however, he said, it is not the correct vision.
