In a turn foreseen by few, the United Kingdom will try to join the Treaty between Mexico, the United States, and Canada (USMCA).
Faced with the fall of its hopes of negotiating a bilateral agreement with the Americans, the government of Prime Minister Boris Johnson will explore the possibility of joining the trilateral treaty, according to officials consulted by the Bloomberg agency.
Johnson met in person on Tuesday with US President Joe Biden. Bloomberg and other outlets reported that same day that Biden made it clear that a bilateral agreement with the United Kingdom is not a priority.
It should be remembered that Johnson is the executor of Brexit. After the political and economic divorce between the United Kingdom and the European Union, the prime minister bet on negotiating a trade agreement with the United States. Then-President Donald Trump gave air to that possibility, but nothing happened during his administration.
