Landslides and road damage in Oaxaca due to tropical storm “Nicholas”

During the last hours, the intense rains caused landslides on the local highway to the Sierra Mixe, in the jurisdiction of Santa María Albarradas.

Tropical Storm “Nicholas” as it passes through the Gulf of Mexico will maintain a rainy storm during this day, developing moderate to heavy rains in the Coast, Isthmus, South Sierra, and the Papaloapan Basin, warned the State Coordination of Civil Protection of the State of Oaxaca (Cepco).

According to the state agency, rainfall of variable but persistent intensity is forecast in the other regions of the state, as well as high waves on the coastline and possible waterspouts, as well as very dense fog banks in mountainous areas.

On the Isthmus of Tehuantepec, several houses were flooded by the overflowing river “Las Nutrias”, for which the authorities of the region activated a preventive plan and set up two shelters to help the population.

Meanwhile, residents of San Miguel Suchixtepec reported a landslide and fall of a retaining wall on a house on federal highway 175, Oaxaca-Puerto Ángel section.

They reported that the landslide occurred this morning after the softening of the ground as a result of the heavy rains.
