The deaths by suicide of children and adolescents exceeded three times the deaths by covid-19 during 2020, warned the System for the Protection of Children and Adolescents (Sipinna) in the framework of the World Day for the Prevention of Suicide.
In this way, during 2020 1,150 girls, boys and adolescents decided to commit suicide, according to the National Health Survey (ENSANUT) at an average of three per day, while the deaths from covid-19 in the referred period was 392 cases.
Going into more detail, the report Impact of the pandemic on girls and boys from the Ministry of the Interior pointed out that there was a 37% increase in girls, boys, and adolescents aged 10 to 14 years and among female adolescents aged 15 to 19 years by 12% in comparison with 2019. On the other hand, it indicated that from 2018 to 2020, suicidal thinking in adolescents increased from 5.1% to 6.9%, and suicidal behavior from 3.9 to 6%.
In addition to being an alert, the data should provoke the reflection that suicide in girls, boys, and adolescents is not a problem isolated from the rest of society and family problems, said Gabriela Ruiz Serrano, a researcher at the National School of Social Work of the UNAM, in the most recent number of the gazette of the maximum house of studies.
