Olaf made landfall as a Category 2 hurricane Thursday night; so far no human or material damage has been reported.
Hurricane Olaf weakened on Friday after hitting the tourist area of Los Cabos, at the southern tip of the Baja California peninsula, leaving heavy rains, winds, and waves in the area, with no reported human damage so far or materials.
At 05:00 local time, Olaf was located 55 kilometers east-southeast of La Paz, Baja California Sur, and was blowing maximum sustained winds of 130 kilometers per hour (km / h), according to the United States National Hurricane Center. States (NHC).
The cyclone was heading at 17 km / h towards the northwest, in a parallel trajectory to the west coast of the Baja California Sur state, where La Paz and Los Cabos are.
State authorities on Thursday canceled activities in the area, a traditional destination for American and Canadian tourists, and nearly 50 flights were suspended.
Olaf, which made landfall on Thursday night as a category 2 hurricane, will cause intense punctual rains (from 75 to 150 millimeters, mm), possible waterspouts and waves of three to five meters in the state of Baja California Sur in the next few hours. , according to the local National Water Commission (Conagua).
Intervals of showers are also expected in Nayarit and Sinaloa, and the southern Sea of Cortez, according to Conagua, which warned of possible “landslides, increased levels of rivers and streams, and overflows and floods in low-lying areas.”
The NHC predicted that Olaf will weaken to a tropical storm Friday night as it begins to move away from the coast.
